Let me tell you from the begining it was very hard to pick the winners. And I'm not just saying that to make you feel better - I mean it! There've been some impressing images, many coming from the space art field, but in the end what mattered the most in the eyes of the judges was originality.

As I've told you in the begining, I've started this contest having an idea in mind - making people push the limits, unleash their imagination, make things that weren't done so many times before, bring back that creativity spark especially in Space Art which got a forgotten genre. I wanted them to make something they are proud of. Sure, many images are great, some of them even impressing but they lack what matters the most...personality, originality, attitude...your artistic essence!

Thanks to everyone who participated in this second edition of Exotika! We'll meet again in spring, when, hopefuly, I'll manage to hook in more sponsors!

And don't forget: be creative! ;)

The Winner

Exotika II by Nameless-Designer

Honorable Mentions

Chilly Teddy by Faei A very nice concept and mood.

Exotika part 2 by DKF Great depth and detail.

Great mood!

Congratulation to all the participants!
Exotika, Part II

:bulletblue:Say what?:bulletblue:

Suirebit and zilla774 are very happy to bring you the second edition of Exotika, the Digital Scenery Contest.
Continuing the succes of the first competition while bringing the challenge to a new level, Exotika 2 features ice as it's main theme and encourages all the lanscapers and spacescapers to create cold, exotic worlds in order to win the great prizes;
However, this time we'll add some spice in the competition...:evillaugh: The images should be in wallpaper format.

:bulletblue:Can you be "cool"?:bulletblue:

I must say from the begining that while the theme of this contest is cold exotism, the main judging criteria will be originality so don't expect throwing a mountain in there and win. We want to see you trying to achieve great, dramatic scenes, we want you to use this competition only as a motivation to bring your ideas and style to a new level, to create breathtaking, original concepts, to show everyone what you are really capable of!

Depending on your response, the future editions may get big enough to bring in important sponsors :)

:bulletblue:Definition of a fake job

As DJTalyn stated very well, more than half of the job offers posted [on DeviantArt Forum] are fake. By fake I mean that you will submit your work and never hear from that person again. You won't get paid or receive any kind of compensation. There are genuine offers but they are so slim that you have to be very careful. The 3 main signs of a fake are jobs posted from an empty deviantART account, offers that seem too good to be true and mentions of a company or organization that does not exist.

:bulletblue:Protection

In response to this growing threat, here are some ways to protect yourself against them, gathered from my past experience:

1) Before accepting a contract take your time to know the person. Talk with him/her on a messenger software, ask various questions.

2) Always ask for an upfront payment, even if you don't mean that. Depending on the client's answer you will be able to figure out fast if this job offer is serious or not! Don't be afraid to ask it - if you loose the client because of this question, the job wasn't serious anyway!

3) While creating the image offer only previews to your client; NEVER offer full sized images unless specified in the contract. Don't give away the final product until you receive your payment! If the job was fake it's better to have wasted only your time rather than your time and the image!

Praetoris added: If they still demand full-size, watermark it. :) Always watermark all your work if it's for someone you're not familiar with.

4) Don't accept jobs that sound too vague or if the one who hires you has no reference.
Always ask for links to previous contracts, or towards the company's site.

5) Make sure you always sign a contract, even if digitally. Make sure you CLEARLY state there what will be your and client's final rights of the image.

DJTalyn adds: Before taking your time to fill an order, make sure you directly contact the person, research any facts or names mentioned and make out a contract.

If you have more questions, feel free to post them here or contact me. I'll answer them asap :)

I am happy to bring you the first digital scenery contest from DeviantArt's history which couldn't have come at a better moment than now, when it's summer and you have plenty of time to work on an image. And because it's summer, the theme of this contest will be no other than to create exotic, gorgeous worlds that will stun your audience.

Wait, you said Digital Scenery? What does that mean?

Shortly put, digital scenery means landscapes or spacescapes (and why not mixtures of both) created with the aid of computer. There is no other media restriction...you can paint, render or even photomanip them. You can even make a mixture of media as long as it's something exotic. Open you favourite program and unleash your imagination!

But how will you judge between Landscapes and Spacescapes? Aren't those different categories?

Aye. And that's why this is a mega contest which actually represents two sub-contests: A landscapes and a spacescapes one. It is up to you to choose where are you going to participate. You can even join them both, but bare in mind that each sub-contest comes with it's own winner and you can't win to both of them.

Sounds cool! So what are prizes?

Well, to learn that go ahead and read the contest details below.

:bulletblue:RULES

1) Submissions must be original artwork and only one image per artist per sub-contest. When you have your image(s) completed, please submit your piece(s) to the contests galleries as follows:
submit-> deviation-> contests-> Exotika --> Landscapes  for a Landscape entry
submit-> deviation-> contests-> Exotika --> Spacescapes  for a Spacescape entry

2) The submitted image(s) must be NEW, and submitted after this competition has been announced.

3) This is a Digital Scenery competition, hence no other type of art is allowed!

4) The image(s) must be submitted before August 30th which is the deadline of this contest.

5) NO Collabs are allowed. I know you guys are used to working together but this time you should do it yourself.

6) For Terra-Space fans: you can try one if you really wish, but it should be submitted to the Spacescapes category, since the object of focus is, mostly, the space part.

:bulletblue:JUDGING

The judges will be judging on the following aspects of your deviation:

- Originality/Creativity
- Exotic, Alien Properties
- Technical Execution

:bulletblue:JUDGES

The following people will judge your entries:
Suirebit, Moonbeam13, Aeires, zilla774, and tigaer

:bulletblue:THE PRIZES

For each sub-contest (Landscapes and Spacescapes) we have the following fantastic prizes.

The Winner: One print (not to exceed $40 USD) and  A one year subscription.
Two Honorable Mentions: One print (not to exceed $20 USD) and A six months subscription each

:bulletblue: Interview

This month I had the chance to take an interview to no other than Mr. Chris aka tigaer who probably needs no further introduction; He was kind enough to answer my questions which, I hope, will help you get to know better the man behind the nick.

Suirebit: To start with, tell us how and when did you start doing art in the first place?

tigaer: I started to play with photo manipulation programs when i got my first pc. Around 1996. With the pc came a corel photopaint version. I started to play around with that tool and was impressed what possibilities such softwares offer. After school i wasn't sure what to do. A friend back then pointed me into the photoshop direction and i started to seriously play with it around 1999. The next two years i was learning the basics and joined deviantart. There i first saw what people were able to do and i wanted to be one of them. All the great digital art on DA back then inspired me to widen my skills into various directions.

Suirebit: We all know you now as a great scenery artist. How was your evolution, as an artist, during the last years? How did you get where you are now?

tigaer:First of all thanks. Yeah how did it all start. Good question. When i started to explore photoshop in the beginning i was also searching for a rendering software that can create wonderfully looking landscapes. I first tried to play with tg around 2000 and wasn't too happy with it. The rendering process on my 450 k6-2 amd cpu took aaaaaages even for the simplest things. Back then i wasn't as patient as i am today with renderings, so i left terragen alone for a while. In 2002, or so, i started to explore 3d programs. Bryce and terragen. I had a faster machine then and rendering wasn't a pain in the a** anymore. So i started to explore terragen in depth. Terragen itself had gone a long way since my first tries in 2000 too... so it worked faster and produced some solid effects. Still, i always thought that straight tg renders looked naked. They were missing life. That's what i soon tried to add with photoshop and so called 'post processing'.

Suirebit: Are you satisfied with what have you done so far? What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?

tigaer: Satisfied. To a certain point yes. I know that i still learn. And i think as an artist you're never satisfied. You always try to move on. You always try new ways, techniques, to realize your ideas. My biggest accomplishment. I guess my 'artificial' piece and almost everything i did after i finished 'artificial'. Artificial made me understand that i reached a level of skill that allows me to do anything i want to do. With a lot of work involved though. Soon i found out... "too much work". So i started to think about ways to be more productive without losing too much of the image quality. I'm making progress with that... one thing i'm truly satisfied with.

Suirebit: Do you consider yourself to be a Pro?

tigaer: Depends on the point of view. When your work becomes printed in magazines. When you're writing tutorials for magazines. When you're working on a freelancer base for clients. Yes then i guess it's professional. From my own point of view i still have a lot to learn before i call myself a pro. Tell me... am i pro? I really don't know.

Suirebit: Speaking of art as a job, what are your plans for the future? Are you considering a career as a digital artist?

tigaer: Plans for the future. Of course. A professional career as concept artist would be cool. At the moment i'm freelancing. Taking everything i can get, artwise. Thankful to have the chance to be creative for other people that can't create what they kinda have in mind. It's cool to get stuff done and make clients happy.

Suirebit: What are your sources of inspiration? What is the bond between them and the creation process?

tigaer: Inspiration? EVERYWHERE! My terragen mountain piece 'gleisshammer'. 'Gleisshammer' actually is a name for a trainstation here in nuremberg! I always loved that name and i always thought it would be a great name for a piece with a big majestic mountain in it. lol Sometimes i see huge skyscrapers and i start to work out extensions for that building in my head. Make things look more futuristic. I have thousands of ideas and not enough time to try them. Often a piece develops when i'm working on it. So... there are differences where i find my inspiration.

Suirebit: And what about other artists? Are there any who inspire you through their works?

tigaer: Of course there are. Actually every picture from whatever artist can inspire me. There are people i look up to. Don't know if that counts as 'inspiration' too. Yannick Dusseault, Dylan Cole or Gary Tonge. People like that are my heroes.

Suirebit:What do you think about self-education ? Is it possible to become a professional artist by teaching yourself or do you have to go to an art college?

tigaer: I think you can reach a lot with selfeducation. Take a look at spyroteknik. As far as i know he learned everything by himself. Now he's an ace too. With enough discipline and will and patience... everything goes. The best thing is you're developing a completely own style. Of course a college can speeding up the learning process.

Suirebit: What do you consider to be the main 'thing' that keeps such an artist progressing? What about yourself?

tigaer: What keeps me going is the will to become better in what i love to do. When i take a look at Dylan Cole's site, or Dusseault's site, then i see what's possible. These guys are professionals and they worked with the best. But it's not impossible to become as good as them in what you're doing. As long as you're willing to try it. So... the 'will' to move on, with what you love to do, like digital art, is what keeps me learning.

Suirebit: As a conclusion to all of the above, is there something you wish to add?

tigaer: Sure. I'm sure you know what comes now. I want to tell everyone that you can make it. I often get questions like "wow, how did you do that" or "please tell me how you became such good with your landscapes". All i can tell you guys is... patience. When you're really interested in the matter of digital art try to follow your instincts. Use the net for tutorials. Try to learn. Read everything that could be interesting for you to move on with your skills. Most important... play around with your tools. Never stop doing that.

:bulletblue: Interview

This month was dilekt's time to answer my questions; What was that? "Who's dilekt?". Well, if you are a space artist yourself or simply like this genre then you surely must've heard of him;
Whether a source of inspiration or just a great friend, dilekt became over the time an important member of our Terra-Space Art Community, a promising artist with a gallery full of eye-catching scenery.

Suirebit: First of all I want to thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions I have. To start with, tell us how and when did you start doing art in the first place?

dilekt: Well, I guess I first started making art at the age of 12 during the summer. I was really into computers and was always looking to discover new things. One day I stumbled upon the marvelous website named DeviantART and it all began from there. I remember seeing all these amazing pieces of art and I got so inspired and motivated. I told myself, I want to do that! But it wasn't until a couple of years later that I decided to make my own account and upload my art.

Suirebit: Tell us, how did you learn making that cool stuff? How was your 'evolution", as an artist, during the last two years

dilekt: Two words: dedication and patience. At first I would try out new techniques to see what worked & what didn't. Once I began getting used to this medium and learning new things,       I was able to properly convey my imagination and creativity into my art. Let me tell you, it wasn't an overnight thing. It took me a long time to get to where I’m at now, and I still think I have a long way to go.

Suirebit: Talking about accomplishments, are you satisfied with what have you done so far? What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?

dilekt: Yes, I’m pretty satisfied with what I have accomplished so far. I still think I have a lot of room for improvement though. What was a pass-time hobby now is much more than that for me. I'd say my biggest accomplishment is seeing how much I have improved over the years and actually knowing that if I can put my mind and effort into something I can make it happen.
I think my piece entitled "The Inevitable" is my own little masterpiece and will always remember it as that.

Suirebit: Do you consider yourself a pro?

dilekt: No, I don't consider myself a pro because I have yet to reach my full potential, and also I’m still 16 and have a long way to go. Until I create art as a job professionally I won't consider myself as a pro.

Suirebit:  Speaking of art as a job, what are your plans for the future? Are you considering a career as a digital artist?

dilekt: Possibly, you never know where the wind may take you, lol. Actually, I’m thinking about being in the IT field and doing digital art as a side job unless I get a better opportunity with a video game company or something.

Suirebit: Sounds like a plan :) I'm sure there are many people wondering how much do you earn out of your prints. And I'm also sure this is something confidential, but if you feel like sharing with us any detail, go ahead

dilekt: Well let's just say I barely made enough to buy myself a hard drive haha. Not that I’m disappointed, just that if I were to depend on this as my main source of income I’d be pretty poor lol. But I am quite happy that people enjoy my art enough to buy prints of them. Couple of years ago I never thought I would be at the point where people would buy my prints, so it makes me happy. The money is sort-of a bonus for me.

Suirebit: What are your sources of inspiration?

dilekt: My sources of inspiration are the night skies, looking at pictures of space and its beauty and of course seeing other people's magnificent artworks.

Suirebit: And what about other artists? Are there any who inspire you through their works?

dilekt: Of course. There are a bunch. To name a few; Gary Tonge, Greg Martin, Dylan Cole, Syd Mead, etc. These are all guys who have been in the game for a long time. Every time I look at their art I get inspired and motivated to create something. They are so talented and skilled, their art has some much imagination and creativity in it.

Suirebit: Some of those artists are self-educated. What do you think about self-education ? Is it possible to become a professional by teaching yourself or do you have to go to an art college?

dilekt: I think self-education is the best way to go. Learning by yourself and using your natural talent I think in my opinion is better than going to an art college. Sure, they teach you the fundamentals and whatnot, but you can learn that yourself. Obviously if you want to get hired by a company you would need some sort of certification, which is the only reason why I would go to an art college.

Suirebit: Thanks for having the patience to answer my questions! As a conclusion to all of the above, is there something you wish to add?

dilekt: Thank you for choosing me for the interview :). I'd like to add, to all the beginners who are doubting themselves, don't give up. Practice, try new things, experiment and be dedicated.

:bulletblue: The artists which work for this project need all the support they can get; Just think that they are investing their time and their skills for our community and that they are doing it for free...the least we can do is to give them a big thanks, so go  :+devwatch: Phaera now and start supporting the team!

:bulletblue: We are in dire need of more team members, especially prose writers and landscapers (mediums: 3d and painting). If you want to apply, simply follow the next steps:

1) Make sure you have in your gallery at least five (5) artworks in the field you are applying for (that is 5 landscapes for a Landscaper position, 5 Space Scenes for a Space Artist position); Also, make sure those are all completed artworks, not scraps or work-in-progress.

2) Send Suirebit a note with the title "Join-Landscapes" or "Join-Space Art"; Include in that note links towards the artworks that best qualify you for this position.

3) Within 48 hours you will receive a reply, telling you if you were accepted or not.

:bulletblue: If you have any kind of questions please don't hesitate to note me ( Suirebit ); Also, please, pretty please, don't ask your questions via comments on my journals or account, as I might not see them. Thanks!

:bulletblue: We've got a new Writing Director! Everyone welcome transferal to the team!

:bulletblue: The spacescape team did a great job so far and we are half of way towards Phase 3.

:bulletblue: As of last week, anyone who hasn't replied or said a word - ever since the project started - was removed from the team list. Sorry, but we must give credits only to those who are really working for this project!

Quote of the moment : "The best moment to let the world know about an iminent impact with a comet is 1st april. That way noone panics, and noone can blame later the authorities for not making it public"

World Creators (2006) : 5th Edition

Isn't it amazing how many new deviations are submitted daily on dA?
That the amount of people who are interested in dA increases daily?
And the fact that so many artists have found a platform to dicuss and present their work to others?

Without a doubt it's a big, interesting and versatile community.
But isn't it amazing to always see the same artists on the frontpage every single day concerning the fact that so many new deviations have been submitted?

We're all aware of that and believe that this has to change. It is already quite difficult for the "unknown" artists to promote their work and gain more attention.

Clearly, we do not intend to deny the skills of those great artists who enrich the community by sharing their magnificent work. But we do intend to enhance the platform in such a way that "unknown" artists might get a real chance to draw the public attention to their own pieces of work by promoting it on the front page of the community.

In our opinion we think it unjust to only have the chance to be represented on the front page if one has the luck of having many watchers.

We would like a better system which allows a deviation to be seen on the front page if, for example, it has 'only' reached about 40 favourites and about 200 views.

Take a look at the actual situation: You have uploaded an impressive piece or art that gets faved according to the number of your total views/watchers. Then, however, a more popular deviant uploads a more or less 'average' deviation and automatically reaches more than the double of your favourites/views in a mere moment.

A new structure of the frontpage could enhance the actual competition on dA, i.e. popular deviants wouldn't be able to best the "unknown" artists by posting a rather average deviation.

A reasonable alternative to present the "daily top favourites" on the front page would be a bigger amount of thumbs which would show the 40 best deviations of the day in a random order.

We think it's in everyone's interest to change the current situation and make dA a place where creating and sharing unique art plays a far bigger role than scrambling for new watchers.

Life and a Lady...

...which rules (literaly); But we'll get to that later.

So I'm 20 now, huh? Had a nice birthday party with the family and then with the friends (in two separate days, hehe). Good part : I had a lot of fun. Bad part: I didn't have time to learn for the following exams, which means that now I must enter Turbo Mode and learn everything in a couple of days. That also means it will take longer for me to read the notes you send to Phaera so don't panic =P

Speaking of Phaera, things are rolling out nicely, 'tho I admit there is a major lack of activity from some members :sigh: 'Specialy the spacescapers. Writing team is doing great however and the land team is slowly catching up.
I must also admit that I have lesser and lesser free time lately (mostly because of uni), but I'll find at least 1/2-1 hour for DA and our project :)

And the lady....yes...well, following the next months I'm gonna work on a new project which will actually be a set of artworks focused on a main heroine called Lady Aribeth (and her Knights of the White Rose :aww:). Hopefully, she will bring a plus of elegance and style in my artworks :)

:bulletblue: We are currently in Phase 1. During this time The Writing Team will set up the bases of this galaxy. This includes History, Planets Naming, Solar Systems Naming, Sectors, Races, Characters and so on.

:bulletblue: Many thanks to liewqi for kindly offering us some web space. Expect a dedicated Website soon!

:bulletblue: The Writing Team is doing a great job! They've already made 8 planets, together with their solar systems, background story, tech details (and I got to tell you these guys are not kidding....those details look like pulled from a NASA file) while 14 more planets are in the works.

:bulletblue: The greatest news is that we are opened once again for applications! Yes! You heard it well! If you want to join the team as a landscaper or space artist don't hesitate to do it now! Simply follow the procedures below.

:bulletblue: There are two Chat Administrator positions available; If you want to apply for them follow the procedures below.

How to join the team

1) Make sure you have in your gallery at least five (5) artworks in the field you are applying for (that is 5 landscapes for a Landscaper position or 5 Space Scenes for a Space Artist position); Also, make sure those are all completed artworks, not scraps or work-in-progress.

2) Send Suirebit a note with the title "Join-Landscapes" or "Join-Space Art"; Include in that note links towards the artworks that best qualify you for this position.

3) Within 48 hours you will receive a reply, telling you if you were accepted or not.

How to join the Staff

In order to apply for a Chat Administrator position, you must:

1) Be a regular on either #seniors or #devart (as a Project CA you will have to spend a lot of time in our chatrooms)

[Introduction]

[God made the world in 7 days...We can redesign it in 49 weeks!]

This was the motto that rallied together the most talented landscapers, space artists and writers of our community in what was to become one of the bigest and ambitious projects that DeviantArt ever seen.

Project Phaera is a real succes; Our team is made of no less than 80 professional artists, who are more than eager to show everyone that wonders do exist!

[And God said "Let there be light!"]

Suirebit and the whole Staff are happy to let you know that Project Phaera will fully start tomorrow, Friday, 10th March 2006.
Now, I am more than sure that you have tons of unanswered questions, so be patient and read everything that follows, as most likely it will answer everything.

[Project Briefing]

[1.Basic Rules]

We cannot start anything until you fully read and understand our rules. That's why I ask you to go to our forums and read them prior to this briefing!

Forums : www.atfreeforum.com/phaera/

[2.Kickstart]

You've probably already heard about the kickstart and wonder what this is all about; Prior to the official start, the directors done a couple of collabs between them, both to set up an example and a base for our project. This was called 'The Kickstart'. You will find all the kickstart materials at the end of this briefing

[3.Phases]

The most asked question so far was "How will this project actually work?"
The easiest way to explain it is by pointing out the main ideas that were discussed at our last staff meeting:

1) Do not worry about management. The Directors will tell you everything you need to know when the right time comes!

2) The Project will be done in several Phases, as follows:

Phase 1 (Start): The Writing Team will set up the bases of this galaxy. This includes History, Planets Naming, Solar Systems Naming, Sectors, Races, Characters and so on. ETA: 3 to 4 weeks

Hence, the following weeks after the start "belong" to the writers!

Phase 2: A database of the so created instances will be made. The SpaceArt team will then distribute them evenly among themselves and will start creating the Visual Galaxy, based upon the writers descriptions. Same thing goes for the Landscapers: When a planet is created, getcracking!

Phase 3: The Writers turn again. Now they will shape the basic story that link the instances of this galaxy.

Phase 4: The Writers will create the final saga, and if needed, extra images will be created to support the storyline.

Phase 5: Staff will assemble the final product.

[4.Submissions]

These are the General Submission Guideliness! Each group will receive additional rules when their Phase comes!
To Submit an artwork to the project, please follow the next steps:

1) Include the Official Project Logo (www.deviantart.com/deviation/3…) ;

2) Do not add copyright text or anything else except for the title! We will make sure you will get all the credits.

3) Submit the artwork to your gallery, adding in the description the following copyright agreement :

By submitting this artwork to deviantART, I give the Phaera staff full permission to display, crop, resize and frame my work, as long as the work is used within the Phaera project, be it for promotional purposes or final displays. The Phaerastaff is allowed to use this image without notifying me beforehand, yet I, the artist, must be properly credited for my due work.

4) Send Phaera a note with a link towards that artwork. IF you do not respect rules 1)-3) the submission will NOT be validated!

5) Upon validation you will receive a reply which will tell you if your artwork was or was not accepted.

[Kickstart Materials]

Prelude Story:

The Prelude Story is done by LiraelGoldenhand, Riangel, Verticae and Suirebit . It's purpose is to introduce you to this wonderfull universe and saga.

* * * Phaera - The First Song * * *

Who am I you ask? It doesn't matter, for I've lived so long that I cannot feel anything anylonger. Nor love, nor hate, nor anger. Nor rage, nor passion, nor warmth.. just cold.. a frozen shackle that will torture my soul forever. You see.. I remember it so well. Might as well have happened yesterday. The day Ener was destroyed in a planetary collision was the day my heart was sealed for an eternity. There are no words, spoken or written, to describe the tragedy. Billions of souls were crashed in an instant. Without warning. Without the chance to pray to our lord. Trapped between two realms forever..

Still, fate likes to be ironic. You see, my child, there was a handful of surviving Enerfins from among the priests - the only ones who had forseen this event. Barely escaping the onslaught, they roamed the outskirts of the galaxy, looking for a place to live. Years of search. Decades even. Until one day, when fate smiled to them again. Exhausted and without resources, they had the luck to come across the planet now called Phaelaxion, which was to become their second homeworld. Named after the most sacred word in their language, Phaelaxion wasn't anything like Ener, yet conformed to their views of a 'perfect' world. This was to be their new home.

Barely having any resources or technology, the reconstruction took many centuries. As the years passed by, their knowledge grew fast, yet with it, their religion. They became a spiritual race, one which held nature over technology, and beauty over advancement. They became the sons of Ener, and this is where our story begins...

Phaelaxion

Landscape done by Suirebit and Verticae : www.deviantart.com/view/300241…

Description done by Riangel, Suirebit and Verticae :

Phaelaxion....the world of wonders; The Heaven, as other races call it. Inhabited by Enerfins, Phaelaxion is the third planet from Ener System, 100LY away from the center of the universe. Named after the most sacred word of the Enerfins, Phaelaxion is a world of both divine beauty and pure spirituality. It's a cold, icy world, just as cold and sharp as the minds of its inhabitants; however, it possesses unique oases, full of luxurious vegetation and exotic creatures. Phaelaxion has no rings; instead it's orbited by one huge satellite called Tak'Mair.

Enerfins, a humanoid race, only inhabited the planet of Phaelaxion less than a century ago. They came onto the planet as a homeless race, ever since their home planet, Enerfa, was devastated in a planetary collision. While Phaelaxion in no way resembles their home, it did conform to the 'perfect' world for the Enerfins, and they settled there. When Enerfa collided, it wasn't more than a handful of its inhabitants who managed to escape the planet. Other survivors have never been known to exist, and the Enerfins were in a state of loss; their ancestors, their friends, their family all were gone. Ironically, this lead them to become a race, strongly influenced by religion. In the mind of the Elders, or 'Archons', their religion was the only way of salvation for leaving behind the once now lost.

Despite their religion, they did continue to advance their technology. They did choose a very specific guideline in this, though, one which even got recorded in Phaelxion law: 'Every technological advancement to be found on the planet, must conform to the following two criteria: 1) No technological advancement whatsoever must be made with the purpose of destroying nature's beauty, nor should it have damaging side-effects next to its main purpose. 2) Any building, vehicle or large piece of machinery may not be built unless the Archons and/or their representatives have decided that its aestethics are in harmony with our natural landscape'. This law, in itself, shows the love and care the Enerfins have for their environment.

All Enerfins are ruled by the mighty Archons, the founders of this world, for they are the wisest among them. The event of an Archon dieing is a rare one indeed, as the Enerfins have an unusually high life expectancy. The Archons know much more than the average person, and much more than any living creature in this galaxy, for they've been collecting information from all around the galaxy for millennia. The archives that contain this knowledge are hidden safely into huge, beautiful, exotic temples, while the safeguarding of these temples has been assigned to the strongest templars, the Tiraxian Knights.

* * *

But who was to know that fate was so ironic? For not only the priests did escape the planet. You see, my dear, when a ship sinks the first ones to escape are the rats.

Convicts, Criminals, Assasins they all managed somehow to survive; And while the remaining priests rebuilt their society, on that far away world, the convicts found a planet for themselves too, the one now known as Ashad Niad.

Ashad Niad

Description by LiraelGoldenhand

Ashad Niad, the sweltering planet of firey industrialization and the home of the feared Mauri, who fight ruthlessly with electric swords and are plated in heavy armours powered by plasma-enhanced thrusters -- an aweful sight to behold. The terrible, ringed world of Ashad Niad, those who speak its name offworld do not speak of it with any fondness. The inhabitants of Ashad Niad, the Shael'ta, take pleasures in using slave labour to complete their megalithic, incredibly advanced cities and monuments. However, you will never see any artificial intelligence on Ashad Niad, for the Shael'ta are paranoid and afraid of robotic intelligence surpassing their own and taking over. While Phaelaxyon is a planet of both divine beauty and spirituality, Ashad Niad is a place of great torment -- to prove to the slaves of the Shael'ta people that they would remain servants of their great lords during the Great Uprising of 7681, the Shael'ta destroyed their charred and useless moon, Suka. The ring of debris around Ashad Niad serves as a brutal reminder to all species, near and far, of the crazed, violent history of Ashad Niad’s people.

News and Announcements

9/3/2006

Yes, you heard me well! Project Phaera has a green-go! Expect soon to receive the General Briefing!

6/3/2006

:bulletblue: I am happy to announce you all that we are about to fully start Project Phaera. There isn't much time left, so hurry up with those applications! Following the next day you will get a couple of notes, both from me and your Directors, which will contain all the needed information!

3/3/2006

:bulletblue: It's time for you to start knowing the team you'll work with, don't you think? Please use our Forums (www.atfreeforum.com/phaera/) or our Chat Room (chat.deviantart.com/chat/Phaer…) more often! If you don't know the guys you'll work with than how can we call this a community project?

:bulletblue: We will soon "seal" the Writing Group so hurry up with your applications! As soon as we do that, Project Phaera will fully start; ETA: 5 days.

:bulletblue: We are curently looking for an experienced web designer as well as a webhosting solution. The website will be mainly used as a resource-base in order to keep things organized.

About the Project

[Briefing]

[God made the world in 7 days...]

This is a call for all the spacescapers, landscapers and writers out there, a call to come and take part in one of the biggest projects of this community, one that will involve thousands of artists over more than a half of year!

[We can redesign it in 49 weeks...]

The purpose of this project is to fully design, populate and give life to a fictional galaxy called "Phaera". How? Spacescapers will design solar systems and planets, Landscapers will design the surface of those previous planets, Writers will cover the story of each solar system, creating - at the end- a huge saga one that will show what DeviantArt community is capable of.

Imagine the power of creation at the edge of your fingertip! Take part in this unique attempt and feel the joy of working together with others in order to create a whole, full-scaled galaxy!

-->Important : There is no restriction concerning the medium! You can paint, make 3D, photomanip...whatever you know better ;) This is a Digital Art Community Project!

[Assembling the crew]

Following the next weeks I will do all possible to make this event an official one and also to spread the word.

During this time anyone who wishes to take part in this project must send me a note, telling me what does he/she want to do (spacescaping, landscaping or writing) and giving a link (or more) to the artworks that best qualify him/her for this project. *Important change : If you want to apply as a writer, instead of a link, describe in the note a fictional planet (you can find a very good example below). Please do take your applications very seriously!

You can also find below the list with all those who applied, which is updated very often.

Spread the word, tell your friends and let the games begin!

If you have any question at all do not hesitate to note me!

IMPORTANT! We have a chatroom dedicated to this event! Join #Phaera!

We also have a stamp for this event!

Example of Planet Description:

Hote is small planet in a close orbit around a type F8 star called Thok. It's orbit is aproximately .70 AU from Thok. Normally a planet that close to a star of that type would be very very hot and deffinately inhospitable by our stadards, hovever Hote is comprized of an astounding percent of Iron ore and has a high rotational velocity (it's day is about half what our day is). It therefore has a magnetic field which is quite strong that deflects a large amount of the radiation away from the planet.

Hote's atmosphere is comprised mainly of nitrogen (50%) followed by oxygen (20%) carbon dioxide (15%) helium (5%) and other elements (10%) this much larger percentage of oxygen in the atmosphere makes fires start much more easily and because of that the plants that live there have developed a fireproof outer shell which is purple, thus giving the entire planet a purpleish tone when seen from space.

Hote has rings, a series of three main bands perpenndicular to it's axis or rotation (which is 20° from it's orbital plane) the rings are composed of mainly chuncks of ice which shimmer and reflect light. It has no major satalites other than the rings.

Hote is a young planet with high mountain ranges and roaring waterfalls. The land of the planet covers aproximately 40% though the enormous alge colonies give the illusion of there being very little water.

[Phaera - Galaxy Design Project]

Introduction - What is Phaera?

The purpose of this project is to fully design, populate and give life to a fictional galaxy called "Phaera". How? Spacescapers will design solar systems and planets, Landscapers will design the surface of those previous planets, Writers will cover the story of each solar system, creating - at the end- a huge saga, one that will show what the DeviantArt community is capable of.

Imagine the power of creation at the edge of your fingertip! Take part in this unique attempt and feel the joy of working together with others in order to create a whole, full-scaled galaxy!

Introduction - What have we done so far

-Project Phaera is a real succes, with 67 artists already having joined this wonderfull team.

-Competent directors were assigned to each group, to assure a proper management and communication between staff and team, special chatrooms and forums were created for this event, to offer the team a proper place to gather up and even more staff positions were created (Chat Directors, Project Directors), to make sure everything goes well.

The Call

Now, are you a spaceartist? Is it your wish to transform the vast reaches of the universe into splendid imagery? Then we're looking just for you. That's right; Phaera is currently still on the lookout for talented, ambitious spacescapers. Simply send a note to Suirebit, and explain why you'd like to be on the team, and show one or two deviations you think best qualify you for this project. We are waiting for your applications!
